Our NVC Family Camp Heritage
In September 2008, Inessa Love, Bob Wentworth and Gregory Rouillard, three members of Capital NVC, were inspired to bring NVC-based family camp to the Washington, D.C. area. Nine months later, Family HEART Camp was born! The inaugural camp brought together approximately 45 participants and staff for an unforgettable week-long adventure in compassionate community.
You might be wondering where Bob, Inessa and Gregory got the idea to hold an NVC family camp in the first place, right? Here is the rest of the story...
Inessa, on the far right in this picture, attended NVC Family Camp on Vashon Island, Washington in the summer of 2008. At this camp she met Elana Sabajon, wearing jackal ears and standing between Gregory and Bob. Inessa was so inspired by her experience in Washington state that she wanted to bring this opportunity to the Washington, D.C. area...and the rest is history.
On January 30, 2014, twelve kindred spirits gathered at Highlands Camp and Retreat Center in Allenspark, Colorado, for an inspiring deep-winter weekend of community called the 2014 NVC Family Camp Summit. Organized and planned by a joint team from Family HEART Camp and the Vashon NVC Family Camp, this landmark event used Open Space Technology to structure three days of mutual learning, celebration and creativity, including brief remote participation by people from around the U.S. and Europe.
Here is a sampling of some of the topics considered at this summit:
- "Golden Goodies" - what really works?
- Supporting families having "edgy conversations"
- Sharing NVC with children
- Creating sustainability - financial and environmental
- Growing the family camp vision
- Assistants / volunteers
Intrigued? Inspired? We hope to make this an annual event that is accessible and inclusive to family camp visionaries from around the world. Contact us if you are interested in being part of this conversation.
